Problem in setting up a Gmail Account with IMAP on iPhone

Configuring an email account with POP3 is easier to configure rather than IMAP. In other terms, a complicated process was involved in order to setup a Gmail account with IMAP. Here we are providing ways which will help you to configure Gmail account on your iPhone

You need to follow the prerequisite steps before configuring your account with any of the following method.

Prerequisite steps to enable IMAP in your Gmail settings

  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. Click the gear in the top right 1.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  5. Select Enable IMAP in IMAP Access section.
  6. Click Save Changes.

Method 1: Using the Free Gmail App

  • Open App store on your phone.
  • Tap on the Search icon.
  • Write Gmail in the search bar.
  • You will get “Gmail – email from Google” in the search results.
  • Tap on GET .This will download and installs the app on your iPhone. One more way is to download the app in iTunes and sync your Phone to install the app.
  • Now Open the app and log into it with your existing Gmail account.
  • This app allows you to access your Gmail account including all sent, received and saved mail.

We recommend you to enable the Push notification in your iPhone settings. To do so, go to Settings−>Notification Center. Tap Gmail from the list of apps and allow badges, banners, sounds and alerts in a way you want to be notified for incoming mails.

Method 2: Configure Gmail account in default mail

  • Tap on Settings and choose Mail, Contact, Calendar from the list
  • Under Accounts, tap on “Add Account”.
  • Tap on Google icon
  • Enter your Name, Email and Password. The description will fill automatically with “My Gmail Account” but you can change it as per your wish.
  • Tap on Next. In this step, your account will be verified and proceeds to next screen.
  • In this screen, you can select the items (Mail, Contacts, Calendars and Notes) which you want to sync from your Gmail account on your phone.
  • Tap “Save”. This will add your account by prompting a message “Account Added”.
  • Press Home Button
  • Tap the Mail icon on your screen to view all the mails of your Gmail.

We recommend you to configure your accounts setting by going to Settings−>Mail, Contact, and Calendars. Under Accounts, tap on Gmail and then tap on the account you just configured. Now Tap on Advanced to access the advanced settings (Preview, Show To/Cc Label, Flag Style etc.).

Google allows you to use two step authentication systems for more security and privacy. In this you need to enter a randomly generated passcode to access your account on an unknown device. Although this provides an extra layer of security for your account but it can lead to connection issues on your iPhone devices.

Kindly follow the steps to create a passcode

  1. Sign in to Gmail on your computer.
  2. Click on icon 2.
  3. Click on 3 .
  4. Click on Sign-in & security.
  5. In Password & sign-in method, Click on 2-step Verification
  6. Now Setup your password on clicking Start setup button.
  7. Enter your number and click Send Code.
  8. Now enter your verification code and click on Verify.
  9. Uncheck the “Trust this computer” and click Next.
  10. Click on confirm button.
  11. Now in App-specific passwords section, click on Manage application-specific passwords
  12. In Select app drop down, select Mail.
  13. In Select device drop down, select iPhone.
  14. Click on GENERATE Button.
  15. Now you get app password for iPhone.
  16. Open “Settings” on your iPhone.
  17. Select “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”.
  18. Select your Google Account from the list of available accounts.
  19. Edit your account information and replace your password with the 16-character password
  20. Now you can connect to your account on your iPhone.

One more method you can try but this method is very less secure

  • Turn Off the 2-step Verification (in case it is ON).
  • In Connected apps & sites section, Turn On the Allow less secure apps
